KOMAI

Here is an elegant vase of baluster-form with foliate base, its iron body generously inlaid with silver and gold, its two foliate cartouches upon an inlaid geometric ground. From the workshop of the renowned metallurgist Komai, this vase depicts a quaint village scene with dramatic gold sunrays in the background and a delightful fishing village with nets and huts with thatched roofs. A Fuji with boats, willow, rocks and blossoming foliage completes the scene. On the reverse, the vase is enriched with extensive and rich gold wiring with two quail rummaging through lush foliage. To enhance the luxurious effect even more, the vase´s foliate collar along the shoulders is inlaid with gold and silver grapes on leafy vines. Gold and silver inlaid signature plaque on the side reads "Seki". This iron vase is in excellent condition for its age with only minor rubbing to the silver. Height: 6.25" Meiji Period, Japan
